Common uses
Mextil improves the heart rhythm and helps keep the heart from beating too fast or in an irregular rhythm.
Before using
Before taking Mextil, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Mextil, if you have other heart problems (eg, heart block or AV block, conductions problems), congestive heart failure, or a pacemaker, if you have low blood pressure, liver problems, or a seizure disorder, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Mextil, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Mextil during pregnancy.
Directions
Use Mextil as directed by your doctor. Take Mextil with a meal or antacids. Take Mextil regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking Mextil at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
Cautions
Do not suddenly stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. This medicine may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine.
Possible side effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are- Blurred vision, clumsiness, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness or lightheadedness, headache, heartburn, incoordination, nausea, nervousness, stomach discomfort, tremor, vomiting. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately- allergic reactions (rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), blurred vision or other vision problems, chest pain, fainting, fever, irregular, fast, or slow heartbeat, severe dizziness or lightheadedness, severe stomach pain, sore throat, yellowing of the skin or eyes.
If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, low blood pressure, slow pulse, tingling in fingers or toes, seizures, and loss of consciousness.
Additional information
Mextil may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision. These effects may worsen if Mextil is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Mextil with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Mextil should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Drug interactions
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking.
